NEW YORK-PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL PARTNERSHIP WITH CON EDISON SOLUTIONS AND NYSERDA DELIVERS SUBSTANTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS

CONSERVATION INVESTMENTS IN EXPANSIVE LIGHTING PROJECTS REDUCE ENERGY COSTS BY MORE THAN $200,000 ANNUALLY

New York, NY, March 22, 2005 - NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the nation's largest, not-for-profit, non-sectarian hospital, has teamed with ConEdison Solutions, a leading energy services company, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to implement a wide-ranging energy conservation strategy at its Westchester campus that will deliver more than $200,000 in annual energy savings at the 613,000-square-foot acute care facility.

The initiative, part of the Hospital’s award-winning energy efficiency program, which is one of the largest conservation programs ever implemented by a major American hospital, consisted of extensive lighting upgrades at the hospital’s Westchester County campus in White Plains, New York.

The cost of the overall energy investment -- implemented with strategic and technical support from ConEdison Solutions and financial support from NYSERDA -- amounted to nearly $800,000.  NYSERDA is providing over $550,000 in grants toward these types of energy initiatives at NYPH with more than $120,000 in funding for this specific project at the Westchester Division.

A ceremony and site tour was held today at the Hospital’s Westchester Division, hosted by Dr. Virginia Susman, Associate Medical Director, NYPH and attended by NYSERDA President Peter R. Smith and ConEdison Solutions’ President and CEO JoAnn F. Ryan, to commend NewYork-Presbyterian for its leadership in energy efficiency programs. Programs at all of the Hospital’s facilities, including two major facilities in Manhattan, have helped save the hospital $745,000 annually.

"NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is a recognized national leader among health care organizations for its dedicated and comprehensive approach to reducing energy costs through energy efficiency," said Peter R. Smith, President and CEO of NYSERDA. "We at NYSERDA are pleased to have been able to assist them in achieving their goals by providing needed technical assistance and financial incentives."

Hospital officials project that savings generated by the energy improvement upgrades will deliver a full payback on the initial investment within 3 years. Overall, the upgrades are expected to generate energy savings of approximately 1.4 million kilowatt-hours per year.

"NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital knows that superior energy efficiency translates directly into superior patient care and superior patient services," said Paul Schwabacher, Vice President of Facilities Operations and Biomedical Engineering at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. "Thanks to our partnership with ConEdison Solutions and NYSERDA, we are proud to be setting a national standard for energy efficiency in the health care sector."

From the inception of its New York Energy $martSM program, NYSERDA has provided the Hospital with more than $1.4 million overall in total incentives, resulting in potential total savings of more than 137 million kilowatt-hours and cost savings of approximately $7 million.

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, for the second year in a row, has earned the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy for their outstanding energy management programs, the only healthcare institution to receive the award in two consecutive years. As a result of their efforts, they generated over $800,000 in new energy savings and reduced carbon emissions by four million pounds.

ConEdison Solutions began working with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in 1999 and now provides many services to NYPH such as technical assistance studies, project implementation, advanced metering and green building consulting.

In 2003, NYPH commissioned three campus-wide energy conservation studies, dedicating $250,000 to the development of key initiatives to identify the best opportunities for capital upgrades that would result in energy savings. To support these studies, NYSERDA contributed a 50% reimbursement as part of NYSERDA’s Technical Assistance program. In 2004, the recommendations outlined in the final studies were implemented with $1.5 million in dedicated capital funding.  These projects represent the first occasion in which the Hospital elected to perform an upgrade based primarily on energy conservation expectations and are a direct result of the hospital’s involvement with NYSERDA through ConEdison Solutions.

“We’re pleased that our partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian, which began in 1999, has been so successful," said JoAnn Ryan of ConEdison Solutions.  “These energy conservation initiatives have been recognized nationally with another EPA Energy Star award, which demonstrates the hospital’s outstanding leadership in energy conservation. NewYork-Presbyterian has shown other institutions that saving energy can help save dollars as well.”
